Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Breaking the Spine where you showcase which books you’re looking forward to being released.
So, this week I’m waiting on the first book in a new YA dystopian series called Scythe by Neal Shusterman:
UK Release Date: 29th November 2016
I think that cover is really striking but, at the same time, what is it supposed to be? I think it’s a woman in a dress with a scythe blocking her or acting as her head. Or maybe it’s someone in a hooded cape, standing side on? It’s like one of those optical illusions. Either way, it’s nice to look at, especially because there’s something a bit early-20th Century about it.
Anyway, I know what you’re thinking, not another YA dystopian series! However, I am a sucker for all things dystopian so this doesn’t bother me. Besides, this one sounds pretty unique. I haven’t read Shusterman’s Unwind series, or any of his other books for that matter, but I know Unwind was popular so hopefully this series will be good too.
Synopsis for Scythe:
In a world where disease has been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed (gleaned) by professional reapers (scythes).
Citra and Rowan are teenagers who have been selected to be scythe’s apprentices, and despite wanting nothing to do with the vocation they must learn the art of killing and come to understand the necessity of what they do.
Only one of them will be chosen as a scythe’s apprentice. And when it becomes clear that the winning apprentice s first task will be to glean the loser, Citra and Rowan are pitted against one another in a fight for their lives.
Are you looking forward to Scythe? Have you read Shusterman’s Unwind series? Did you enjoy it? Let me know in the comments below!
It makes me so happy when someone new is reading something by Neal Shusterman. I’m really looking forward to this one.
I see the red cape, side on. But if you look, there’s another face mirror image on the other side of the scythe. Interesting.

That’s great to hear you’re a fan of his! I don’t know why I haven’t given his work a try before. I’m now seeing the red cape side on more, before I was seeing some kind of busty headless lady haha! I can’t see the mirror image face on the other side of the scythe yet, but I’m going to keep staring at it until I do. It’s a really interesting cover!

It really is. It reminds me of that optical illusion of the young woman and the old lady.

OH MY GOODNESS, my mind is BLOWN right now!! Thank you for this, I would have never, EVER noticed it- I hadn’t even noticed the first face!

Right! A face without a body, which maybe represents whoever loses the battle… it’s such an intriguing cover.

Oh! I’ve seen this before but didn’t even see the face until you mentioned it! I thought it was just a hooded figure whose face was completely inside the hood, holding a scythe lol. It is a great cover though, and the blurb sounds so interesting!

Hahah I’m seeing so many things whilst looking at the cover, my eyes are very confused! But yeah it’s a really cool cover, hopefully the story is just as good.

So I LOVE this choice because I LOVE Neal Shusterman! He is just… the most genius author, and I love his writing, and he seems like a genuinely good guy to boot. I shall sing his praises forever, I guess hahha. Also, this book? So far (about halfway through!) it is INCREDIBLE. So I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! It has that same… eeriness that Unwind had, that unsettling feeling. Like, I keep writing down all these incredible nuances because I cannot wait to write a review- and I NEVER feel like that hahahah. So yes, I hope you love it- and I think if you’ve enjoyed his other books, you will enjoy this too!

Hahah glad to hear you like him! I know his books are meant to be good but I’ve just never got round to them before, so Scythe will be my first one. It’s great that you like it so far! I love unsettling and eerie books haha so this should be right up my street! Thanks for stopping by!
